Empty nesters Shannon O'Rourke Griffin and her husband, Roscoe, are living apart. Roscoe has moved to Kansas after being offered a new teaching job, but Shannon refuses to move from their home in Missouri. Roscoe starts an affair with his psychiatrist, Dr. Irina Puscariu, even though it is forbidden. Shannon is furious when she finds out, and after months of confrontations, she has had enough. On January 13, 2012, she drives 250 miles throughout the night to Irina's house. When Irina opens the door, she ambushes her, shooting her four times in front of Irina's mother. Shannon pleads guilty to second degree murder and is sentenced to 20 years in prison.
